ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

In October 2014, the vibrant artwork Antes Vulgar Agora Fino by the collective assume vivid astro focus (avaf) was installed in the cafeteria of the Special Children’s Center, which provides round-the-clock, year-round respite services to children with disabilities and life limiting conditions. The installation’s exuberant colors and patterns alter the entire environment, and the converted cafeteria provides patients with a space that engages their intellect and both encourages social interactions and arouses creativity.

This project was made possible through the generous support of Glori Cohen.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

ABOUT THE ARTIST

assume vivid astro focus, “avaf,” is a collaboration between Eli Sudbrack (b. 1968, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Christophe Hamaide-Pierson (b. 1973, Paris, France). It also refers to a collective of international visual and performance artists. avaf works in a variety of mediums including drawing, sculpture, video, and performance to create captivating and imaginative pieces that call for endless visual and aural exploration. avaf works heavily through collaborations with musicians, dancers, designers, and other artists, challenging the conventions of authorship and artist personas. Their work is rooted in themes of free speech, civil rights, class, gender, and national identity. Sudbrack lives and works between Sao Paulo and New York, and Hamaide-Pierson lives and works in Paris.

avaf has had solo exhibitions at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, New York, NY; the Suzanne Geiss Company, New York, NY; LIGHTBOX, Miami, FL; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland, OH; and the National Museum of Art, Oslo; among many others.
