ABOUT THE INSTALLATION
In December 2011, RxART launched a fundraiser with the goal of completing an installation at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. The response exceeded all expectations, with an incredible outpouring of support and contributions from our dedicated supporters. Thanks to the overwhelming success of the fundraiser, RxART was able to bring to life a stunning installation in the hospital’s Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences the following year.
This installation features fourteen captivating photographs by the renowned artist James Welling, sourced from his acclaimed Glass House series. Each photograph captures the iconic Philip Johnson Glass House in a unique light, literally and metaphorically. Through the lens of nature and various colored filters, Welling transforms the architectural masterpiece into a mesmerizing symphony of reflective light, mirror-like surfaces, and vivid hues.
As visitors navigate through the hospital's waiting area and patient paths, they are greeted by these luminous works of art, each inviting contemplation and comparison. The collective impact of these images not only enhances the physical space but also uplifts the spirits of those who encounter them, offering moments of beauty and respite.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
James Welling (b. 1951, Hartford, CT) received both his BFA and MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Working primarily in photography, Welling manipulates traditional methods in order to question the norms of representation. He utilizes a variety of technologies and processes, including gelatin silver prints, chromogenic prints, Polaroids, and digital pigment prints using different types of digital cameras. In his photograms, he abandons the camera altogether, using light and color filters to imprint images directly onto film and create otherworldly, surreal pictures of natural and architectural subjects. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
Welling’s work has been exhibited at numerous museums and galleries including the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY. He is represented by David Zwirner and Marian Goodman Gallery.
