ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

In 2008, RxART worked with the artist John Monti to transform a formerly dark and formidable area of Children’s Hospital Boston into a space bursting with Pop Art inspiration. Titled Fancy for Boston, Monti’s installation drew on a vocabulary of starbursts, flowers, and gumdrop-like circles to brighten the center’s walls.

This project was made possible by a generous grant from the Leonard Wagner Charitable Trust.

ABOUT THE HOSPITAL

ABOUT THE HOSPITAL

Serving as the primary pediatric teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School, Boston Children’s treats more children with rare diseases and complex conditions than any other hospital.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

ABOUT THE ARTIST

John Monti (b. 1957, Portland, OR) received his BS from Portland State University and his MFA from the Pratt Institute. He describes his sculpture as the utilization of “decorative, pop, and minimalist strategies that both critique and embrace aspects of pleasure and the commercial aesthetic.” Monti’s slick, brightly colored sculptures refer to pop-utopian visions and capture the attention of viewers while simultaneously making them aware of the falsification and emptiness embedded in the institutions of commercialism. Monti is a Professor of Sculpture at the Pratt Institute and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Monti’s exhibitions include shows at the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; the Sculpture Center, Queens, NY, White Columns, New York, NY; and the Wakita Museum of Art, Karuizawa, Japan. His work is included in major private and public collections, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; the Yale University Art Museum, New Haven, CT; and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
