ABOUT THE INSTALLATION
In 2016, RxART collaborated with Ryan McGinness on a site-specific installation at the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD). For the project, McGinness created Energy, an expansive mural for the new Landstown Health Center. The sprawling site-specific mural—100 feet wide by 12 feet high—crowns the atrium, greeting over 460,000 young patients, their families, visitors, and hospital staff.
Energy manifests as an expansive constellation of vividly hued arabesque shapes, varying in size and intricacy, akin to what the artist aptly describes as “event horizons” or contemplative gateways that beckon viewers into an endless realm of vibrant color. The artwork pulsates with a palpable rhythm, living up to its title by infusing vitality and creative spark into the atmosphere of the center’s main entrance.
Major support for this project was provided by Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation, and additional support was provided by Meredith and Brother Rutter.
ABOUT THE HOSPITAL
Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughter is the only full-service freestanding children’s hospital in Virginia and serves the medical and surgical needs of children throughout greater Hampton Roads, the Easter Shore of Virginia, and northeastern North Carolina. The nonprofit CHKD Health System operates primary care pediatric practices, surgical practices, multi-service health centers, urgent care centers, and satellite offices throughout its service region.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ryan McGinness (b. 1972, Virginia Beach, VA) blurs the lines between fine art and product as well as digital design and traditional painting processes, creating intricate worlds of iconographic signage. The New York Times proclaimed, “McGinness has become an art star, thanks to his Warholian mix of pop iconography and silk-screening.” Some have even called McGinness the Andy Warhol of the 21st century. He attended Carnegie Mellon University, where he graduated as an Andrew Carneige Scholar. McGinness lives and works in New York City.
His work is featured in many collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA; the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, CA; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y Leon; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; among others.
